Wushu group aims to emulate previous feat of four gold medals

The Nanyang Wushu Federation of Sarawak aims to maintain its achievement of four gold medals at the 3rd International Tai Chi Chuan Tournament in Kaohsiung County Stadium, Taiwan, from Sept 23 to 27.

Representing Malaysia, the contingent comprising Prof Dr Song Swee Hee, Yeo Liew Yian, Lai Lee Sze, Alvin Yeo and Jacqueline Song will compete in the apparatus and forms categories.

This is the second time the federation is competing in the tournament after having won four golds, a silver and a bronze in 2008.

Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukri handed over a national flag to the contingent at her office in Kuching yesterday to send them off to the competition.

Team leader Prof Song said the contingent's participation would upgrade the standard of tai chi as a cultural sport in the state.

He said that emphasizing the sport would put Sarawak and Malaysia on the tai chi map as the country had potential talents.

ˇ§We lack funding to efficiently develop tai chi in Sarawak and are sourcing funds from the public and parents of exponents. We hope the state provide us with annual grants for our activities,ˇ¨ he told reporters.

II was learnt that the federation had 600 members in Kuching alone
